The Value of Works by George Condo
George Condo is a renowned American painter and sculptor whose works make a bold statement. In his own words, Condo once said, when crafting his creations, his goal is “to make an incredibly important statement immediately.” Early on, he got his inspiration from Picasso, and Joan Miro, famous for bugs and insects flitting about. Condo was also fascinated with Rembrandt and Goya, and as he developed in his career as an artist, influences from these greats can be seen in his work.
What is unique about George Condo’s creations?
Condo brilliantly mixes aesthetics that are in opposition of each other, such as combining old master paintings with psychological cubism and pop art. Condo says he paints different perspectives of psychological states. One such example is “The Insane Psychiatrist” from 2002. Art experts believe that his work may be a smart addition to any collection, due to the aggressive neo-cubism nature of his pieces. The word from the art world is that since there is a very limited supply of George Condo paintings that come up for sale, collectors are clamoring for their chances to purchase these exceptional pieces.
The Life of George Condo
George Condo was born in Concord, Massachusetts. He majored in music theory at the University of Massachusetts in Lowell, MA. During his years there, he simultaneously studied Art History. After two years at UMass, he relocated to Boston and worked in a silkscreen shop, and later joined a punk rock band called “The Girls.” Also in the band was abstract painter, Mark Dagley. Dagley and Condo had the opportunity to meet Jean-Michael Basquait, and after being influenced by Basquait, George Condo picked up and moved to New York, getting noticed in the East Village in the 1980s.
In 1999, Condo was awarded the Academy Award in Art, by the American Academy of Arts and Letters, and in 2000, Condo released his feature film, “Condo Painting,” directed by John McNaughton. Condo went on to be awarded numerous awards, and serves as a visiting lecturer at Harvard.
